General and surprising competence porn

I've been thinking about what Likewise: Dinner party was really about for me as a director. Two new pieces of interesting came into my inbox this week, and they relate to this. The first is the concept of insights being a combination of general and surprising. I think this is the essence of improv that I love to watch: it's true because it's general. It's funny because it's surprising. Even for the players. You can read this article here . Secondly I read a review of Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut film, and they mentioned competence porn . It's all about smart people doing smart things. And that's what dinner party is about. We've finished our run at the Fringe and I'm really grateful to have had such a splendidly competent cast. May our "porn" career be long. Let's see what general and surprising stuff we'll cook up for next time!

Behind the curtain: How do you get into the cast?

What we know about improvising is that it's so cool that you're unlikely to be in the audience for long before you want to try it. Here is how I cast (today!). I give preference to those who have completed some long form training (the more, the better)* actively rehearsing with a troupe or at drop in classes are improv junkies are women have lived more than 30 years support the show and the improv community return emails, facebook messages and texts turn up to rehearsals show up to shows on time I like. I am constantly juggling my priorities with casting because I long to be fair, and I also know that the fairest thing I can do to in providing a space for improvisers to play is be happy doing it. So that's why I've added the last criteria! I dearly want to support improvisers in Sydney, and I dearly want to see and play in excellent improvised scenes. I appreciate all those of you who want to play and who love improv like I love improvising! I

The final likewise - really!

Likewise is finishing up on 9 March 2016, with an international inter-city cast. Anna Renzenbrink from Melbourne will be playing, along with Caspar Schjelbred from Paris/Denmark, Linda Calgaro, me, Dave Tieck, John Knowles and maybe a few more. In the 3 years since Likewise began, monthly in 2013 at the Roxbury Hotel, and then weekly in 2014, 2015 and 2016, lots has changed in the Sydney improvisation landscape. In 2013 there were maybe 3 active long form troupes in town. Full Body Contact No Love Tennis was the only long form show in town and it had a limited cast and a particular young demographic. In November 2015 Likewise hosted 8 active long form troupes (and had applications from 4 more: all different form the original 3 troupes). I wanted with Likewise to make improvised comedy for "grown ups" - people over 30. I wanted to make cultural allusions that others understood. And to understand the ones my fellow players made. I wanted to improvise scenes that were true
